One can only observe with awe stricken amazement and wonder why a continent endowed with so much resources and vast viable land is wallowing in abject poverty. Her people gifted with endless potentials but living under harsh conditions, eventually forcing out its vibrant youths to foreign borders.
A recourse to history indicates that, the continent’s leadership has the penchant of commodifying their followers from time immemorial. The ancestors of these new breed of leaders were architects of domestic slavery even before the coming of Europeans. Expanded kingdoms such Asante will demand tributes in form of slaves up to the tune of 10,000. They have institutionalised this inhumane trade by displaying human beings alongside kola, textiles, Salt, fish and livestock.
What then can reparation do to leaders whose level of corruption, greed and wickedness is cast in stone hard concrete. To what extent will Europe’s compensation do to alleviate the woes of people whose tribal bigotry is carved in granite.
A visit to some rural communities that are saddled with severe social problems of lack of water, toilet facility, Poor access to education highlights the extent to which people are taken for granted and are reduced to nothing. In the face of these dominant challenges, they were offered plastic chairs branded with political party colours for which a special ceremony was held. A ceremony with an expenditure that exceeds the few plastic chairs they donated.
Of what use are plastic chairs to people who defecate in the open? Whose children walk 20km each day to school? In fact people who still depend on barter trade for a living? The level of disregard and dehumanisation among Africans is deeply rooted and etched in iron.
Yet, a day is coming when Cyrus, the Lord’s anointed who’s hand the Lord has held will arise for my continent. He will break into pieces the hearts of brass, cut in sunder the iron bars of wickedness and he will make all crooked officials straight. Our problem is self inflicted so also must our healing come.
